In 2003, a group of scientists on the Indonensian island of Flores discovered a strange skeleton: a human-like in form but far smaller in stature, it was like nothing seen before. 'Homo floresiensis' was the real-life hobbit, a distant ancestor of humanity standing at only around three feet tall, and its discovery prompted questions which have caused a bitter rift between anthropologists lasting to this day.
