Spy in the Sky

About the Show

In the spring of 1960, a CIA spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. Overnight, the plane, the U-2, became the most famous aircraft in the world, and pilot Francis Gary Powers, who miraculously survived the crash, achieved a notoriety that would haunt him for the rest of his life. Behind this dramatic incident is the equally incredible tale of a team of creative engineers and courageous pilots who, under orders from President Dwight D Eisenhower, raced against the Cold War clock to design, perfect and deploy the U-2 in order to uncover desperately needed information about the Soviet Union's military capabilities.
