Speer, Hitler’s architect and armaments minister, was an unlikely Nazi: from a privileged family, he was educated and well-mannered. He didn’t seem to fit the image of a war criminal. Speer’s defence was very different from that of the other Nazis. He was the only one who unreservedly accepted responsibility for the Nazis’ crimes, against the advice of his lawyer.
