Revealing more family strategies at work, and the heavy price the young pay in hostile takeovers. Part 6 of 12.
At first, forced labour was used to break down and humiliate the Nazis’ political opponents as well as ordinary prisoners and the so-called 'asocials' (including Jews, Sinti and Roma). Over time, the Nazis exploited more and forced workers, men and women, to support the war economy. After Germany’s invasion of Poland and the occupation of western Europe, the work-force of the defeated nations became a significant part of Germany’s war booty. Part 1 of 3.
The system of Nazi forced labour became increasingly radical. Slav prisoners in particular were categorized as 'sub-human' and suffered terribly from the racism of the German population. That was especially true for Soviet prisoners of war and civilian 'Eastern Workers'. By 1942 forced labour was deployed on a gigantic scale, including by private industry. The longer the war went on, the greater the German losses, the more workers were imported into the Reich as forced labourers. Part 2 of 3.
This film documents the escalation of the Nazi forced labour system. As the war neared its end, more and more forced labourers died: through work, on the Death Marches and by mass murder. After the war, the fate of the forced labourers was denied and concealed in both west and east Germany. Post-reunification, there were inadequate attempts to reappraise the crime, socially and legally. But compensation has remained largely symbolic. Many survivors have still received no compensation at all. Part 3 of 3.

For the first time five of those survivors who were on the highest floors of the south tower tell their incredible stories of their escape from the impact zone. Where they were in the building, the split second decisions they made, and their families, faith and sheer courage and determination would all play a part in their survival. This film combines their poignant testimony with user generated footage and remarkable film archive from the day.
