Focusing on Africa’s predators and how they hunt, from cheetahs running down gazelles to lions taking on the mighty buffalo. Even the best hunters can be outrun and outwitted. Part 1 of 12.
Lion Air Flight 610 was just 13 minutes into flight from Jakarta, Indonesia, when it plunged into the sea on 29 October 2018. This was the first fatal aviation accident for the 737 MAX, killing all 189 people on board. Just five months later, tragedy struck again on 10 March 2019, when the 737 Max serving Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, crashed approximately six minutes after takeoff from Ethiopia, again killing all passengers and crew. What followed was an intense investigation into what caused these two devastating crashes. In this episode former NTSB investigators talk us through how these tragedies could have been avoided. Part 1 of 10.
On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 had just taken off from New York City’s LaGuardia Airport when it collided with a flock of birds, destroying both engines. With all engine power lost, Captain Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger and co-pilot Jeffrey Skyles were forced to glide the plane and perform an emergency ditching in the Hudson River. All 155 people on board survived the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’ thanks to the quick thinking by the crew. This episode features the accounts of three passengers who survived what could have been a fatal crash. Part 2 of 10.
A routine flight from London Heathrow to Belfast International Airport ended in tragedy when British Midland Flight 92 crashed onto a motorway embankment near the town of Kegworth on 8th January 1989. An engine failure meant the crew would have to make what should have been a straightforward emergency landing. Tragically, the pilots mistakenly identified and shut-off the wrong engine, leading to a catastrophic crash near the M1. In this episode, survivors give us their first-hand account of the horrific accident. Part 3 of 10.
Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303 was near the end of its 90-minute journey from Lahore to Karachi when it dramatically crashed on 22 May 2020. While attempting a second approach after a failed landing, the Airbus A320 tragically collided with a densely populated residential area of Karachi only a few kilometres from the runway. In this episode, we hear from one of only two survivors of the horrific crash. Part 4 of 10.
Beginning with a searing indictment of slavery, the first episode of this series dramatically evokes the causes of the American Civil War. Here are the burning questions of Union and States' rights, John Brown at Harper's Ferry, the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, the firing on Fort Sumter and the rush to arms. Major figures such as Lincoln, Lee and Grant are introduced while the episode concludes with the disastrous Union defeat at Manassas, Virginia. Part 1 of 9.
The second episode in the series begins with the political infighting that threatened to swamp Lincoln's administration and then follows Union General George McClellan's ill-fated campaign on the Virginia Peninsula, where his huge army meets a smaller but more resourceful Confederate force. The programme also focuses on Ulysses S Grant, whose exploits come to a bloody climax at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee, and concludes with rumours of Europe's readiness to recognise the Confederacy. Part 2 of 9.
Convinced by July 1862 that emancipation was now morally and militarily crucial to the future of the Union, Lincoln waits for a victory to issue his proclamation. As the year wears on there are no Union victories forthcoming thanks to the brilliance of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E Lee. In September 1862 Lee invades Maryland and on the banks of Antietam Creek, the bloodiest day of the war takes place, followed shortly by the brightest: the emancipation of the slaves. Part 3 of 9.
The fourth programme in the series reveals how the Union disaster at Fredericksburg prefaced further successes for the Confederacy. At Chancellorsville in May, Lee wins his most brilliant victory but loses Stonewall Jackson, and at Vicksburg, Grant's attempts to take the city by siege are stopped. The programme highlights the fierce Northern opposition to Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and ends with Lee's decision to invade the North again to draw Grant's forces away from Vicksburg. Part 4 of 9.
This episode opens with a dramatic account of the Battle of Gettysburg in which 150,000 men fight to the death in Pennsylvania over a period of three days, culminating in Pickett's legendary charge. Also chronicled are the fall of Vicksburg, the New York draft riots, the first use of black troops, and the battles at Chickamauga, Georgia and Chattanooga. The episode closes with Abraham Lincoln in Gettysburg where he struggles to articulate what is happening to his people. Part 5 of 9.
