12 August, 1985 saw the deadliest single-aircraft accident in aviation history. Japan Airlines Flight 123 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight carrying 524 people from Tokyo to Osaka. Just 12 minutes into the flight, the Boeing 747 jumbo-jet suffered a fatal decompression that ripped off most of the tail. With a total loss of hydraulics, the crew were unable to control the aircraft which tragically crashed into a mountainside.
